Musical Sanity

Posted by roadpoet on July 9, 2008

I’ve been attracted to music since I was breathing I suppose. I often am reminded that when real little I would walk around singing “what’s that buzz tell me what’s a happenin” or whatever the propoer phrasing is. I believe it’s from Jesus Christ Superstar, but I could be off on that.

Anyway, I’ve owned 8-track players, boomboxes, turntables, tape decks, cd players, big bulky portable headsets, and yes I do own an ipod. I’ve had a harmonica for many years now (which I can’t play) and throughout my life I’ve owned four guitars – but the most I could ever play was the intro to ‘Redemption Song.’

Now that I’m writing more, I’m listening to more music as well. Often I listen to my itunes player while writing. itunes keeps track of the 25 songs listened to the most, so I thought it would be fun to see what they are. I won’t bore you with all 25, just enough to give an example of my current favorites.

In no particular order here they are: There’s 5 from pearl jam (my fave right now is betterman); 4 from counting crows (my all time fave is goodnight elizabeth) – i do listen to a lot of these two bands even when not writing; 2 by alicia keys; 4 country songs – the devil went down to georgia, callin’ baton rouge, would you go with me, and rough & ready; valerie loves me by material issue & The Freshman by verve pipe.

The song I’m listening to most often this week though is an acoustic by Chris Cornell – singing Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean.’ It’s fantabulous.

Other stuff I’m listening to recently: Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Mazzy Starr, Liz Phair, Leonard Cohen, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Mother Love Bone & Radiohead.

Song playing right now: Johnny Cash singing Nine Inch Nails ‘Hurt’

All this music helps keep me sane over and over again. My mind is often like the needle on a turntable when it comes to the end of the album. The album keeps spinning and the needle just hugs the interior so that it has a place to be.

peace.
